Friends in the 10 ft Vert Ramp

Pro Mike Frazier worked with Micah and the other vert skaters this week.

Micah got his first Stalefish in the 10ft during his vert run in the vert contest.

Probably sweetest pic of the week for us. Micah kept flying out of the frame!

When Micah and I got to Woodward East this week we were stunned to see this incredible new park being built. It made me think about all the athletic canvases out there: The baseball field, the football field, the basketball court... even though there are differences, they are more alike than different. Skateparks on the other hand can be uniquely different in structure. This new plaza is a work of art that also has a functional purpose. This plaza rivals looks like it could be set outside a famous national museum. Watching the guys labor through the building process was not too different than watching a mother give birth to a beautiful baby. Those guys worked from 6am to 11pm in heat and rain. I got to hang w/the work crew some. They were all real cool, especially the project manager Bill. Most if not all were skaters. They seemed to really love their work. Their company is California Skateparks and they have some awesome parks built.

William, Cody and Micah on the new, sweet, pristine, beautiful plaza...

Micah got some vert instruction from Mike Frazier. There was a mystery skater who came in today -- TONY HAWK! Micah got to skate Cloud 9 with Tony, Kevin Staab, Mike Frazier and Kevin Johnson.

On a different note, keep Brewce Martin founder and owner of Skatopia in your prayers. Last I heard he was airlifted to Huntington, WV for his severe head injuries.

Park Daze was a hit! Micah enjoyed skating in the rain and I enjoyed playing some fris w/a bunch of skaters. He got his longest lipslide ever (wet coping helps), plus his first ever nollie varial heel to revert out in the mini. Thanks Reid for putting it on. The trash collection for a deck was brilliant. Congratulations to PhenOm/Kragon Online Shop who placed 3rd at Top Shop in MN this weekend! Way to represent!

PRO ATHLETES MENTOR PROMISING ACTION SPORTS AMATEURS
IN THE REALITY SERIES “NEXT X,” SET TO DEBUT ON DISNEY XD

-- Developed with ESPN, Series Features Chris Cole, Scotty Cranmer,
Billy Marks, Lincoln Ueda and Van Homan --

Production has begun on “Next X,” an exciting reality sports series developed by Disney XD in association with ESPN, featuring five of the world’s top professional action sports athletes mentoring promising young amateurs in their chosen sport, showing them how to crank up the action, hone their technical tricks and skills and to go “big time,” imagining, learning and growing to be the next action sports superstar. The eight-part short-form series will debut MONDAY, JUNE 8 (7:05 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD, DisneyXD.com and DisneyXD mobile platforms. The story will culminate in August with a 30-minute television and online special highlighting the amateur athletes’ VIP experience at X Games 15.

“Next X” is in production at Camp Woodward West, one of the top action sports training facilities in the country. A combination of traditional storytelling and action sports excitement, the series is produced by Evolution Media (Disney Channel’s “Bug Juice,” “Big Brother”). The executive producers are Douglas Ross, Greg Stewart and Kathleen French and the co-producers are Sue Seide and Alex Baskin.

The professional action sports athletes are Chris Cole (skateboard), Scotty Cranmer (BMX), Billy Marks (skateboard), Lincoln Ueda (skateboard) and Van Homan (BMX). They’ll lead the way for five up-and-coming action sports amateurs who already publicly compete on the amateur circuit and have the determination and talent to accomplish their goals of going pro. They are:

11-year-old Ian Bradley, a BMX amateur from New Hampshire who recently competed at the Toronto Jam
11-year-old Matty Cranmer, a BMX amateur from New Jersey who competes at the expert level
12-year-old Mitchie Brusco, a skateboarder from Washington. This year he completed at the Tampa Am contest
9-year-old Tom Schaar, an advanced skateboarder from California who recently skated at the California Am contest
11-year-old Micah Wu, an amateur skateboarder from Kentucky who competed in the King of the Groms skateboard contest last month in Minneapolis

“Next X” marks the second Disney XD project developed with ESPN. In February, Disney XD debuted “SportsCenter High 5,” a short form series geared towards boys 6-14 that celebrates the spirit of accomplishment -- whether it’s a basketball player beating the buzzer with a 3-point shot or a snowboarding ace soaring above the half-pipe -– through a compelling, fast-paced presentation of each week’s five most
triumphant, awe-inspiring moments in sports entertainment. A new installment of the series, hosted by Emmy Award-winning ESPN reporter Josh Elliott, airs each Monday (in the 7:00-8:00 p.m., ET/PT hour), followed by multiple presentations throughout the week, on Disney XD.

Disney XD is a basic cable channel and multi-platform brand showcasing a compelling mix of live-action and animated programming for kids age 6-14, hyper-targeting boys and their quest for discovery, accomplishment, sports, adventure and humor. Disney XD branded content spans television, online, mobile and VOD platforms. The programming includes series, movies and short-form, as well as sports-themed series developed with ESPN. In the U.S., Disney XD is seen on a 24-hour, advertiser supported network that reaches over 72 million households via its basic cable affiliates.

Here we are in snow covered Golden Valley, MN. Its hard to believe that this is Micah's 50th competition! After an 8 hour trek from KY to WI, Orlando drove us in with fellow rider Zach Kral (World record holder for most consecutive kickflips--1546!). We arrived around 11:30am and checked into the Super 8. Right when we walked in we ran into two of Micah's GA ripper friends Hayden Victor and Austin Gordon. We had met them at Camp Woodward last year. After getting settled we spent the day at the park. It was busy as usual. Zach worked the street a lot. I video'd him doing a kickflip front boardslide. Micah had to wait until evening to compete. By afternoon we met up with William Penniman and his family. After the 5:30pm riders meeting, the mini semi-final runs were on. You only got one run, with a first wall rebate (if you fell on the first pass you got to start over). William, who had not even ridden the mini because it was so busy (like 5-8 people in at once!) qualified 7th to make the finals Sunday. Micah skated against 26 of the best experts from the CA, GA and MN qualifiers and placed first in the semifinal round. He said, "I was relaxed because I told myself that I wanted to skate well and have fun, but if I did not make the finals I wasn't going to worry about it." Well, we'll see what happens in the finals. Jamie Foy (who dominated Micah in fingerboard skate at lunch -- a real nice and talented kid) placed 2nd in the semis. At Progresssive in GA, Micah got 2nd in the semis, and Jamie 1st.
